How to use tech tools in a meaningful way... It's more than having having the gadget, it's how you use it.

Which Web 2.0 tools do I use regularly to engage and motivate students? See below. Do your best to understand my crazy directions! Honestly, you may wonder, how did I learn to use these things? I just "played" with it and checked out How-to videos. How did I hear about some of them? Other teachers... then I started googling Edtech teachers and started learning more and more! Later when I joined an EdTech Twitter group... it really took off!

Wordle - http://www.wordle.net/create Word clouds... super cool...
Take spelling words, poems, paragraphs etc.... enter into wordle and the site will create a "word cloud". Just fun with words! Use it to introduce key vocabulary for a unit of study or create one with all your students names... The kids love it!

One problem, you can't save a wordle. So you need to open your wordle once created into full screen. Take a screen shot - To do this, click on the Ctrl button and the PrtSc button (Prt Sc is print screen). Copy/paste the print screen into Word or Powerpoint or another file. Double click on the image and crop it by clicking on the crop button and move the sizing arrows. Save your wordle image as a jpeg in your "My pictures". Next... you can include your wordle in your blog by choosing the upload picture image... or even open it - and copy/paste into your blog.

Glogster and Eduglogster - Image a poster that can include scroll bars for information, music and videos!
Glogster - http://www.glogster.com/  is the free version... anyone can set up an account. You just need an e-mail address. This version is just missing a few of the "bells and whistles" of Eduglogster. m
The following is a video that explains how you use Eduglogster and Glogster...

Eduglogster - http://www.edu.glogster.com/ you need a license. To get  a license you need to pay for it. However it's worth it. As a school you need to get a license, then get a "tech-savvy" teacher to help control it.... As a teacher, it takes a little patience to get used to navigating through the site, setting up passwords and id's. Write down all the login id's for your students with your class list and the passwords. The user id's are hard to remember. Even though they will have a "nick name" on the account (just a first name with last initial), you will still need to login using the strange combination letters and numbers to log in.

When your students present using glogster, sometimes it takes a while for videos to download... if you see the pink "donuts" swirling for a long time, hit the refresh button (double green arrows) to the right of your URL window.

You can embed a glog into your blog... you just need to get the embed coding

Prezi - http://www.prezi.com/ Better than Powerpoint......All on-line... super cool to use! My students love Prezi. It's fairly easy to use... students from a variety of techno-knowledge can use them... it's engaging and really captivates an audience! To use, students will need to create their own account, where they will need to have an e-mail. As a teacher, record all their information, just in case they forget! Prezi's can be linked to blogs... This way everyone in the class can view the Prezi presentation and give comments.

This one is just cool... guy introduces, "We Will Rock You" in Japanese... Then the song Prezi Presentation starts... Way to neat!

Voki - Create avatars with your students using http://www.voki.com/. You can use vokis for story-telling, recording the perspective of a character from a novel, french oral presentations, or even sharing a message such as "Happy Mother's Day" to your blog or in an e-mail. You will need headphone with a microphone or a computer with a mic. You can use a phone, but it will cost you the long distance call to New York!i.com

Create an account... you need an e-mail. Set up an avatar (cartoon character) with your student, choose the facial and hair characteristics, clothes... background, record your voice, make sure it recorded properly, save it. Now you can a voki. You can follow the directions and e-mail to a friend or family member or embed or link to a blog. If you embed several voki's in a row on a page, there may be a weird glitch... the same voki will repeat... no idea why... Anyways, create a link instead on your blog of your voki avatar.

Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/  I love it... For connecting with fellow teachers  from around the world about books and other Edtech people. Mainly it's just to share good sites or interesting videos. I do not use it to share "dumb" stuff... ie: What I ate for lunch... (Who cares??)  I also use it as a means of quick communication with students. Do they need a phone. No... it's on-line... twitter.com... they can send me a message and I can tweet them back right away. Do they use it? Some do. I used Twitter for volleyball messages regarding games etc... For those kids who didn't "tweet" , I  had a couple students send other players messages on Facebook to let them know what's going on. So long "phone tree". This is social networking with the next generation!

How do you do it? Create an account on Twitter... then download it to your Blackberry, Anderoid or Smartphone. It's all free!

By the way... my Twitter id is - jstewiestewie if you want to find me!

Tweetdeck - www.tweetdeck.com
Something else to try... Organize tweets... Try tweet debates. I still need to work with this one more.

Infographs - So what's all the buzz with these??? Really cool visuals used by the media, advertisers, textbook manufacturers...
So what's an infograph? It is a diagram that uses pictures rather than words to convey information (although occasionally single words may be used to label elements of the sociogram) and symbols, such as arrows, to show the connections among the facts and details. How can we use them to teach? What reading/viewing strategies can be integrated using these?  I've been using them in my classes with eduglogster, but I think your could use prezi or any publishing type software... Just a different way to communicate and opens up discussions on how symbols can be universal for communication.
A good infograph includes all important points, clearly shows relationship among the different points, and is easy to understand.
